The current issue of The Advocate includes an interview with adorable 27-year-old bedhead Nico Muhly about his next composition project, an opera “based on a true Internet romance/friendship between two teenage boys that ended in one of the two stabbing the other to death.” Muhly’s “teen gay Internet sex drama,” to a libretto by Craig Lucas, is co-commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera and Lincoln Center Theatre. Meanwhile Muhly is touring in support of his new CD Mothertongue

Has anyone else listened to excerpts from his MotherTongue album on YouTube? What crap. Composing an opera for the Met? Talk about having greatness thrust upon one.
Crap indeed… and i like Yaz’s “I before E except after C” but that was pure crap.
Great!!! Gay teenage angst can turn you into a killer. Just the kind of positive image and message the community has been waiting for. Why don’t they just make an opera out of “Boys in the Band” and be done with it?
Maybe Theo Adam and Peter Schreier can do the Leipzig premiere– with Celestina Casapietra in the Tori “toxic” Spelling role of the obnoxious best friend.
Does anyone here estimate the chances of Muhly’s opera appearing on the Met mainstage as more than one in a billion?
