Sweet Thursday
Here are another half-dozen past Trove Thursday highlights ahead of my new parterre box live-recording series launching a week from now.
For Mozart’s birthday in 2018 I gathered together 16 of the composer’s finest concert arias in live performances by a dazzling array of singers: Anna Caterina Antonacci, Montserrat Caballé, Gianna d’Angelo, Sabine Devieilhe, Elina Garanca, Reri Grist, Barbara Hendricks, Edda Moser, Jessye Norman, Alex Penda, Sandrine Piau, Graziella Sciutti, Beverly Sills, Joan Sutherland, Lydia Teuscher and Julia Varady.
Charpentier’s Louise isn’t performed so often, but the San Francisco Opera gave it a chance in 1999 with an impressive cast: Renée Fleming, Felicity Palmer, Jerry Hadley, Samuel Ramey.
Another René—Jacobs—conducts a delicious broadcast of Georg Philipp Telemann’s rollicking Der Geduldige Sokrates.
Arianna in Creta is one of Handel’s rarest operas with a superb cast including Sandrine Piau, Kristina Hämmarström and Ann Hallenberg, conducted by Christophe Rousset
Opera singers Dorothea Röschmann, Angelika Kirchschlager, Ian Bostridge, Hanna Schwarz Florian Boesch tackle Brecht and Weill’s delicious Die Dreigroschenoper overseen by HK Gruber
Sensational soprano Asmik Grigorian, still absent from the US, stars in Tchaikovsky’s rarely heard The Enchantress.

Christopher Corwin began writing for parterre box in 2011 under the pen name “DeCaffarrelli.” His work has also appeared in , The New York Times, Musical America, The Observer, San Francisco Classical Voice and BAMNotes. Like many, he came to opera via the Saturday Met Opera broadcasts which he began listening to at age 11. His particular enthusiasm is 17th and 18th century opera. Since 2015 he has curated the weekly podcast Trove Thursday on parterre box presenting live recordings.
