Long rumored, here it is: Anna Netrebko sings “Suicidio!” from La Gioconda!

    evening all!

Finally got to hear Ans first go at “Suicidio!” and, I see many interesting and elaborate comments above with which I agree, so I all I really have to say is that I side with Milady and others who said this was a valiant attempt, but it’s still a work in progress. To my ears she handles the register jumps pretty well in the beginning and we get some lovely phrasing from her at around :42, albeit she sounds a smidge flat…then we get an amazing ascent around 1:26 in an almost subito piano fashion that sounded great, but then at 1:46 and again at 1:50 we hear the widening of the vibrato Ivy has mentioned and the rest was pretty good, if a little short-breathed until 2:53 which sounded kind of strident. The ending could be better since she was hardly audible, though I think that’s partly due to the raw sound quality of the recording as well.

Hopefully she’ll work on it and improve by the time she sings it onstage as she normally does and of course the usual urgency and dramatic flair is prevalent throughout… Not sure this rises to the level of grandezza but with a few more attempts it very well might, at least for me. This is not to say she sounded tentative (she hardly ever does) but it was quite raw in parts, which I suppose has its own appeal, but I prefer a slightly more polished approach.

Never fear, Antikitschy! As with Bolena and Lady M, Anna will work it all out and we shall have a Gioconda with gorgeousness and grandezza. Just don’t inflict poor Mr. Tamura [of yesterday’s Met broadcast Don Carlo] on her as Enzo!

Yes I’m inclined to think you’re right Milady. I didn’t hear the Don Carlo broadcast but saw some comments…poor Mr. Tamura…I’m sure no one is feeling worse than he is at the moment. Hopefully he’ll be able to recover and make a triumphant comeback.
