Schwarz, legendarily, has had Erda in her repertoire since at least the 1977 presentation of Patrice Chereau and Pierre Boulez‘s Jahrhundertring. In the performance shared here today recorded last spring in Basel, she’s a spry 81.
For Mattila, on the other hand, the below Ortrud was only her second attempt at the role following a 2019 debut in Munich. Mattila was, of course, an Elsa of reference, though cher public can judge if Ortrud was a better temperamental fit than a vocal one as of 2024.
