Cher Public

So let’s start ’cause we’ve got an awfully long way to go

For the busy month of October (nearly 300,000 pageviews and an astonishingly sticky 3:19 average session duration!) La Cieca (not pictured) is elated to announce that parterre box published some of its most popular posts ever. The breakdown is after the jump.

  1. Renée! F!
  2. Dmitri Hvorostovsky is alive, his wife assures us
  3. Turandon’t
  4. A voice that must be heard
  5. Untouched by an ‘Angel’
  6. Peter Gelb admits defeat
  7. No fits, no fights, no feuds and no egos
  8. Cervelli! Cervelli!
  9. Sgombra è la sacra megaplex
  10. Reason to believe (tie)
    Eternal, feminine (tie)

I don’t know where to put this comment but I have to say, good lord is this Vienna production of L’italiana in Algeri they are livestreaming racist. I think it’s the same one they do at the Met except here Mustafa is in full blackface. The brown bodysuit with wooly body hair is a nice touch.

    • It’s the same Ponnelle production except the Met doesn’t do it with blackface.

In Vienna, the productions is now credited as “after a production by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle.” Some of the blocking remains the same, but the moving platforms have been replaced by some very awkward placement of the characters. The petite Isabella is not given anything like clothing for a diva and her first costume looks horrible on her. They were, of course designed to flatter Marilyn Horne, but they do nothing for the current Isabella in Wien. Much better outings of this Ponnelle classic have been mounted by his former assistants who knew what he wanted and how he rehearsed the opera. Some of the loudest piccolo playing I’ve ever hear in the theater too.

I missed the livestream , but I saw pictures on Luca Pisaroni’s facebook. I was very surprised to see such insensitivity coming from an usually sensible artist. The body suit with patches of hair is so tacky, imo.

Does that 3:19 average session duration include when I click on an embedded video or audio and listen all the way through while minimizing the window behind the work I’m supposedly doing?

    • La Cieca

Yes, but it also includes people who click through to parterre to check to see if there are any updates and then click away again almost immediately.

      • Porgy Amor

        “Oh, shit! Porgy Amor?! Tl;dr.”

        • (For what it’s worth, your articles are consistently among my very favorites on Parterre. That rankings piece was frameable.)

Thanks, and likewise. When you were getting a lot of shares on social media for the Fleming piece, I kept steering people to your earlier review of Olivier Py’s cabaret show.
