Clever!
It has to be said that, irrespective of what one could say about Dame Gwyneth’s wilder vocal moments, that dance is a great piece of acting. It is both ecstatic and pathetic — the way she looks as though she her feet are so heavy that she has never danced before. And where did (does) the woman get her energy from?
The credited singer, Nichelle Nichols, was Star Trek’s Lieutenant Uhura and was, appropriately, born with the first name Grace.
Lordy, Grace Bumbry was/is an incredible beauty and a dynamic personality on stage!
Cieca, do you, or does anybody else, have info on the theater and production? I would bet the set is recycled from Cavalleria Rusticana with what seems to be a church at the head of those stairs. It works, sort of, as generic Mediterranean, but it doesn’t suggest Seville to me at all.
That video is from the famous film of Carmen with Bumbry, Vickers, Diaz, Freni, Vienna Phil, and Karajan. It is a lipsynched film based on a 1967 Salzburg production and is quite wonderful (Bumbry is indeed an amazing actress). It’s a wonderful Carmen, and I quite recommend it.
man, i couldn’t recognize who those two above were. from the hair, i thought, it looked like callas. i thought it was callas with richard burton in some “antony & cleopatra” i never heard of.

What a shame Karajan didn’t nix the Freni woman for Joan Carlyle and record Bizet’s opera in good, clean English!
Tosca as interpreted by the Diva, Stefani Germanotta. Watch at least until the song starts to repeat.
