Many years ago, I found Tancredi on Naxos with Sumi Jo and Ewa Podles, and both of them are terrific. Ewa, to me, has a wonderfully plummy, round sound, which I like. One of the other contraltos mentioned above has always left me cold. In addition to bringing Podles to the Met in major roles, I wish Peter Gelb would bring back Jennifer Larmore (besides Gertrude in Hamlet, I don’t see her on the schedule).
Larmore and Podles in Ariodante could be a hit – find a smaller barn for them and a Handel orchestra, and bring in the NYC guy Rufus Muller for the part of Ariodantes’ brother – and I will take the next flight to the US
Podles doesn’t have a conventionally beautiful voice. No one laughed at Kathleen Ferrier or Marian Anderson. And I can’t imagine that anyone laughed at Schumann-Heink or Louise Homer.
Daniela Barcellona?

Ten years ago I recall someone asking one of the Met apparatchiks if Podles would be doing anything there. He answered: “Oh, is she still singing?”
