Don’t expect much in the way of art at NYCO for the next few seasons, but, on the bright side, George Steel probably has sufficient water-treading skills to avoid drowning. [NYT]

I guess it would be a waste of effort to bash the NYT, but really? This is all they could muster for an editorial? At least the WSJ had some balls!
Every little bit helps
Not editorial, but total PR bullshit as if written by Mr. Steele himself
Take this example: Imagine a stocholders’ meeting where they were told that the company’s liquid assets had dwindled from $57 million to $16 million due to a long hiatus of activity ‘getting things on the road again’. The heads of the company then tell the shareholders, their idea for staying afloat is: asking for donations and paying attention to drumming up, what is current total non existent business or revenue. Suggest they then play the song ‘Dancing on the 92nd Floor of the Titanic’ as George Steel gives them a bullshit -treading speech, playing with his favorite chili dog. I am sure its script would any other tacky soap opera script appear like a Shakespearean masterpiece.
Instead – put up the NYCO clearance auction flag and start being honest.
Brava/o to the editorial page editor(s) of the “ol gray lady” , for voicing their feelings of the importance of NYCO’s role in the cultural life in NYC..and the Nation..
..in other matters..RIP, Michael Jackson…AND..Farrah Fawcett…..
And Ed McMahon.
Brooklynpunk, I admit that they did a good job stating the importance on NYCO to NYC’s cultural life. However, I think the treading water bit is straight out of PR. He’s not treading water, he’s drowning and had the TImes stated that, it would have hindered his fund raising efforts even further.
So Steel’s a bulldog…I guess even Yalies can fail.
By the way this article is just hilarious:
Juiciest bits:
Mr. Steel began harboring similar thoughts. ”I had despaired of ever finding a woman like Sarah,” he said. ”She can wax enthusiastic over a barbecue sandwich. Hers is not ornamental knowledge.”
Over cocktails, Ms. Thomas spoke of how Mr. Steel’s heart was won: ”George is a notorious party animal, so you know that it couldn’t have been just anybody to persuade George to change his ways.”
Who the hell uses “wax” in real life? Steel deserves some props just for that. And ‘ornamental knowledge’. Wow.
what a pitiful excuse for an editorial … the opera ain’t over til the Grey Lady sings — not!
#9 -Whatever-
Why is it “a pitiful excuse for an editorial” (Friday’s NYT)..exactly WHY???,,,
..I would have thought that those with a wish for diversity…and JOBS..in the NYC regional cultural arena would be praising the Times for expressing the hopes for NYCO’s continuation, not slamming them…
