regied refuse
Kudos to tannengrin who identified last week’s Regie puzzler correctly as Nabucco. La Cieca’s heart, though, belongs to Leper Ello, who made a minimally plausible case for Boris Godunov (“The Fool – in drag – laments the future of Russia”).
There’s more to lament in this week’s very serious staging.

A cracked out, angry version of Fille du Regiment. Has to be…
Frey had a contract with Philips in the 80s, and I think he recorded for them Bacchus with Jessye, and perhaps the Beethoven 9 for Colin Davis’s Dresden set (he did a 9th in Munich, not part of the cycle). Might he also have been on a Philips/Bayreuth Tannhauser?
And where does one find a recording of Haitink conducting Strauss from the Royal Opera? It wasn’t commercially recorded, was it?
Giulio Cesare:
1. Empio dirò tu sei
2. Dall’ondoso periglio
3. V’adoro pupille
Tubsinger: Radio broadcast tape. No it was not commercially released that I know of.
Perhaps I shall make a clip the offending Paul Frey bits and post them on parterre so we can all have a bash-fest.
Mitridate, Re di Ponto?
