a summer place
While your doyenne is busy this weekend with “Viva la Diva!” you, cher public, may want to spend a few suspenseful moments perusing the latest iteration of Brad Wilber‘s MetFutures, hosted for the summer at Sieglinde’s Diaries.

That puritani in ’14 will not happen lol. This may sound superficial, but what is dessay without high notes? Her voice is not innately beautiful or unique. Nor does she have the heft to move into lower lying roles. She is a great artist, but is quickly losing her capital.
I can’t even imagine her really pulling off sonnambula next year…let alone ophelia in ’10. What will she make of the mad scene, which is customarily sprinkled with high E naturals? Taking away all the cheap thrills from an already second-rate, meandering opera will sure make for a boring evening.
I guess i was just thinking about SF and the solti recording of ariadne. I assume at the MET, Leontyne had to delve deep into her truck driver voice in order to project the lower parts of the role.
Agreed – Dessay will not be singing Puritani in 2014. The role is a good bit lower than many of her others, and it isn’t as if she’s gaining colour, richness or anything, in fact, as she ages – she’s just loosing the top, and sounding more and more raddled as time goes by.
ARIADNE wasn’t much given in my day– you do know I was the definitive Klytemnestra on all the world’s important stages?
but I could sing Ariadne, Zerbinetta or the Komponist *tomorrow*– it’s a question of color and tessitura.
I think Famous Quickly’s Zerbinetta might be rather surprising…. although I did read a quotation from her this morning which said ‘In all humility I must say that the range of what I did in San Francisco was hardly equalled anywhere, including at the Metropolitan Opera’.
Famous Quickly…if you are who I think you are…or more importantly…who you think you are…I have one question. Why did you let DelMonaco sing the way he did on your CARMEN….c’est tragique!
How interesting. Still no cast up for Stifellio? What do you all think? Will they get Radvanovsky, or Guleghina, or someone else? Maybe everyone they’ve considered said no. Wasn’t it Sharon Sweet who last sang it there? Televised I believe.
Also, I notice Georghiu for a Tosca with Falk Struckman as Scarpia. That oughta sell tickets. I wonder who the Cavaradossi will be?
And some stuff for Voigt, all of the expected stuff of course. I wonder if she would be asked to sing Minnie in Fanciulla. She sure looks it, might sound good too. Or they could ask Mattila to sing it.
I want to say – thank you for this!
