UPDATE:  Be sure to join Commie-Winning Doyenne La Cieca for what is sure to be an historical webchat tonight beginning at 6:45 pm.

According to an announcement on the Met’s website, tonight’s performance of Tristan und Isolde featuring (together! for the first time!) Ben Heppner and Deborah Voigt will be streamed live over RealPlayer. In honor of this eagerly-awaited partnership, La Cieca will host what will surely turn out to be the longest webchat in internet history, beginning at 6:45 PM and continuing until all our fingers go numb. Here’s a link to the chat, and remember to go to metopera.org at 7:00 to get the RealPlayer stream.

I am assuming that this is an AUDIO stream, correct?
It is unclear from the MET announcement.

I was thinking of going to see Aprile Millo’s performance at the Zeferelli event tomorrow but may be I should tune in instead…

As of now, Sirius is *not* listing the stream (instead there are the scheduled 1999 Simon Boccanegra and a 1975 Siegfried). I wouldn’t be surprised, however, it Sirius carries it, but one never knows, does one? I will be clearing my hard drive to record this momentous event (especially on the not-so-off chance that something will go wrong!)

    It is an audio stream.

Wow…the MET is really making a big deal out of this…I just received an email telling me about the live Web stream…

You know, it’s really amazing the mileage Gelb has gotten out of all this. La Cieca is right, he is a fucking genius. And whatever one thinks of any of the individual singers, he has managed to put together a series of very good TRISTAN performances. Even the first one— which is the one I saw in the house— was a good performance…MacMaster was not great but he was not nearly as bad as some claim…and he certainly did not deserve to be booed. And the rest of the cast was grand and Levine and the orchestra were magnificent.

Gelb & the MET have obviously gotten more press than they would have ever gotten if Ben & Debbie had done all the performances. And that has always been one of Gelb’s stated aims: to get the MET to be relevant, to be a part of the everyday cultural conversation.

By my count the NY Times has printed four reviews so far (Tony T, Holland , Smith, Tony T) and will no doubt have to print a fifth one if tomorrow’s Debbie/Ben pairing actually happens. Pretty unheard of.

    Woohoo. I can’t wait.

oh puleeeeze… two of the most boring voices around… who wants to hear this pair?

and no, gelb is not a fucking genius. if only he knew how to cast an opera with real singers…

  • sogalitno says:

of course there is that little connection Mr Gelb has with the NYTImes… methinks that may help a bit in the coverage.

i have tickets and yet want a copy too – i guess i will try to set up my TR to go to the real player stream and pray that it works… or take a chance on sirius being preempted …

    dilemmas dilemmas

maybe i should just take my laptop to the house and chat during the intermissions…from on the scene!

Yeah – you’d think the way they are promoting this it was Birgit Nillson and, well, some great Tristan (I can’t think of any tenors as good as Nillson – are there?????) together again, raised from the dead. It’s just Deb and Ben, folks. They are WAY better than most, but it’s not an historic event. Perspective, people, perspective.

Who is Heppner’s cover for tomorrow, by the way?
