While whoever conceived of this set list is certainly demented, the first thing that came to mind – and a submission that cannot be left out – is the legendary Jonas Kaufmann Christmas album, “It’s Christmas!”

To fully understand its impact, we must remember where we were. Picture it: November 2020. We were preparing for our first holiday season without family and friends, as we all (well, most of us) did our duty and hunkered down alone for the holidays. Then, what to our wondering ears should appear, but a 40-track Jonas Kaufmann Christmas album, arriving with a level of absurdity that could not be ignored.

The album begins innocently enough, with a traditional version of “Gloria in excelsis Deo.” But by the midpoint of this 40-song odyssey, we have moved into the English-language selections, where Kaufmann’s hyper-articulate production of every syllable sends the whole enterprise firmly into the uncanny valley.

By the end, it all culminates in a karaoke-ready version of “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” complete with cheap electronic accompaniment and a level of camp that defies ordinary description. It is pure filth, and yes, I listen every December.

What a gift.
