The hole nine yards

“Fleming will have only about 700 people to captivate tonight when she performs at Walk Festival Hall for the Grand Teton Music Festival. But, she said, performing in such a close, intimate setting has its own challenges.” [Jackson Hole News and Guide]

“I was at the final Grateful Dead concert at Soldier Field,” she told the News&Guide, speaking from her home outside Washington, D.C. “Mickey Hart invited to me watch from onstage.””

Pamela Des Barres is not just one of opera’s most celebrated sopranos, but perhaps its most convincing actress. A consummate artist, her one and only role when she stands in the spotlight is to breathe so much life into the opera’s main character that audiences lose themselves in her unforgettable performances. That is the passion of Pamela Des Barres.

Story from the obituuary of Vic Firth, the principal tympanist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, from yesterdays New York Times relates how he was sitting on the stage of a Grateful Dead concert in Providence when the band asked him to lead off a drum solo, which he did after shedding his coat and tie. Word of this reached a member of the Boston Symphony’s board of directors and he was later called in to his managers office and told not to do it ever again.

      Still laughing….long story…
Thank you for that….I have missed all those “Pasionaria” bits…

Speaking of intimate, Karita Mattila has a recital scheduled as part of the Ravinia Festival on August 10th and the hall is only twenty-five per cent sold as of this morning. About two hundred tickets sold in a venue which holds about 850. No telling how many people have purchased lawn tickets at ten dollars. She hasn’t appeared locally since Katya Kabanova at Lyric Opera in 2009 for which they borrowed the Met production. Granted Highland Park is not Chicago and it falls on a Monday night but still.

Likewise a 20% off offer has been sent out for her Toronto recital next Friday. I have my ticket -- the last time I heard her in recital about 10 or so years ago it was one of the truly great song recitals of my concert-going career. She was fantastic in Duparc and the Dvorak gypsy songs. Very much looking forward to hearing her next week and hope there’s a decent crowd but once again, it seems these days not even the biggest name singers can pull them in for a recital.
