Cher Public

Dell’abisso

The news from New York has been rather dire these last few weeks, cher public; La Cieca is the first to admit that. But your doyenne would like to remind you that things could be worse. A lot worse.

“Ah,” La Cieca hears you saying, “One of those young, svelte camera-ready artistes, no doubt: none of them can sing.” Well, guess again.

  • From D’amor on, Trebs has been on fire. Just terrific.

    • Clita del Toro

      I agree.

    • Glad to hear of Netrebeko’s success as Leonore. I wonder when she’s singing it at the Met…

    • Flora del Rio Grande

Trebs must be coaching Leonora with Radvan!

  • Clita del Toro

    It’s on Rai 3.

    • Clita del Toro

Go to operacast and find RAI 3.

      • ML

I see it listed, Clita, but where does one click?

    • A. Poggia Turra

Slightly better quality signal on ORF OE1

      http://oe1,orf.at/konsole?show=live

      • ML

That won’t work here, alas. But thx Poggia.

      • A. Poggia Turra

        Oops -- http://oe1.orf.at/konsole?show=live

(had a comma in there instead of a period)

        • ML

Well, that opens, but it doesn’t lead to the Verdi.

Better give up. I appreciate everyone’s help!

          • bluecabochon

Am only seeing a brief intro video with Gatti. Is there a direct http link?

      • bluecabochon

I am listening on WDR3 (cologne). It opened in iTunes and the sound has been perfect.

        • bluecabochon

Clicked on this: 128K MP3 [WINAMP]

        • ML

Thx blue but I don’t have Apple.

          • bluecabochon

Are you saying that you can’t open any link and get it to work?

            Click on “Listen Live”

            • bluecabochon

Of course, this is audio. Isn’t there going to be a video relay on August 15th? I read that somewhere today.

            • Lohengrin

Will be on Arte and Classica, 20:15 CET, try on Arte live per internet.

  • Constantine A. Papas

Domingo is no baritone, and I’ll never pay to see him, no matter who sings with him. There’s no baritonal gravitas in his voice, even if he hits the right notes and his pitch is not drifting. His Simon B was a disaster, after which my mind was made up. He had old the glory, and it’s time to quit.

    • ML

It is past time to quit. There is an ugly beat in the voice, inevitable at 73, and he was an artist of the integrity claimed, he would not be putting everyone through this!

      • ML

        if

      • ML

He is actually bringing down a show at the Salzburg Festival, and depriving someone else of a break.

        Shame on you, Plácido!

        • Well, yes and no, sort of. He is artistically bringing down the show to be sure, but his presence in the cast has helped to sell the production out a the 420 Euro or whatever it is top. So that ends up sort of a wash, as least as the Salzburg management would define it, though it’s fair enough to criticize PD for lousy singing.

As for the “depriving someone else of a break,” I don’t know. Salzburg is not exactly big on taking chances on unknowns these days: the casting is either big stars (and not too many of those) or else reliable artists who’ve been singing around German-speaking Europe for the last decade or so. So if Domingo were not the di Luna, I don’t think there would be any 27-year-old future Bastianini in the part: more likely it would be, on the one hand, Thomas Hampson or Dmitri Hvorostovksy, or, on the other, Vitaliy Bilyy or Artur Rucinski.

          • ML

Hvorostovsky (still the best), Lu?i?, Bilyy, Sgura, Ruci?ski, Meoni, Frontali, Dobber, Nucci (only 72), Guelfi-C, Markov, Hampson — more or less in order of preference. Or they could call Muti for a young referral.

    • Cicciabella

Just finished listening to the last two acts. Domingo was unspeakable. Lemieux horribly miscast. Whose idea was it that she should take on Azucena? Meli was either very ill or should never have moved on to the heavier Verdi roles, or both. I probably have to watch Netrebko to fully enjoy her verismo-like approach to Verdi. Her top notes were thrilling, as always, and she was vocally leagues ahead of everyone else. I hope things improve by the 15th (webcast).

      • That’s a shame about Lemieux. I haven’t heard her recently but I’ve known of her since she first got started, and am a fan. Azucena struck me as odd casting and I posted about it a couple of days ago. I was hoping that I would be pleasantly surprised. Oh well.

She singing Quickly in Toronto this fall (in the Carsen production) and that’ll be a great role for her. She’s very good in the Glyndebourne production.

        • Cicciabella

I’m a fan too. I’ve heard her live and she’s fantastic in the right repertoire. Shame on the Salzburg Festival for such knuckleheaded casting.

  • Clita del Toro

ML go to opera cast, click on Saturday, scroll down to the Trov. performance, click on the radio station Rai 3 or which ever other stations they list. I use Tunein Radio app to find the station.

    • ML

Then I just see a Pesaro ad and something for WWI. Yet the thing is clearly listed on Operacast, a new site for me.

  • Clita del Toro

I love the TuneIn Radio app. You just make your own favorites list of all the stations (from all over the world)? you listen to and just click on them. It’s so easy. I do this on my iPad and IPhone.

    • Rackon

Does this app work for android too?

  • Ruby

I am still enjoying this a lot. I am often so glad about not having too refined ideas and knowledge! Anna surprises me and got me all teary eyed. I barely hear the others.

    • bluecabochon

That’s a good philosophy today, Ruby. :) I am enjoying it for the Verdi factor and Anna, who gives me the chills too, in a good way.

I’m getting a really good stream via iTunes Radio today as well. :)

  • Ruby

P.s: there are many like me out there!

  • Clita del Toro

Cieca, LOL. Who the fuck is that Ulrica?

    • armerjacquino

Elisabetta Fiorillo. The photo’s captioned if you hover on it.

  • Ruby

Thank you Bluecabochon, I am glad you understand!
Enjoy the rest of your day and weekend!

    • bluecabochon

You too, Ruby. Great weekend here in NYC. Wish I had a beach house today. :)

  • ML

Oh, God, I just played the Ulrica! Where / when the hell was that?

  • Ruby

That’s where my employers are….in their multi mill house on the water in the Hamptons…..

  • Cicciabella

To get back to La Cieca’s fortune-teller, I feel compelled to point out that expecting a larger, nondecorative singer to be extremely good is on par with expecting a sylph-like, attractive singer to be execrable. Both preconceptions would be based on prejudice.

    • Flora del Rio Grande

Or, Cicci, is it that such expectations are based on experience?

      • Cicciabella

Only scientific research could answer that question, Flora. But thinking about how one would go about designing it is making my head go all achy.

  • Clita del Toro

WAY WAY OFF TOPIC: I was just on my FB page and I heard a click. The camera in my iPad had taken a picture of the FB page and my bookmarks while I was still on FB. How is this possible? Anyone have an idea.

    • Clita del Toro

Never mind. I called Apple and found out that it is possible to photo pages that you have on your screen. I just happened to do it my accident.

      • Lady Ears

Shift-Command-3 will do it every time! BTW, Shift-Command-4 allows you to take a photo of whatever area you want of something on the screen.

  • DeepSouthSenior

I played the clip for Mrs. DeepSouth this morning. After less than a minute she said, “OK, I’ve heard enough.” I pointed out that this this Ulrica, the fortune teller, and that we heard the wonderful Stephanie Blythe sing this role in the Live in HD in December 2012. She replied, “I can’t believe it’s the same music. Singing like that was what I thought opera was like when I was a kid. That’s why I hated it back then.”

    • DeepSouthSenior

      ” . . . that this was Ulrica . . .”

    • Uncle Kvetch

Blythe was so much fun to watch in that HD, wasn’t she? She looked like she was having the time of her life.
