She had that quality on stage and as an affectation, but she was a pretty earthy broad if you ask me.

No one can be called "sylph-like" who says things like "anywheres else."

Yea I have...and she was both. She had a sylph-like elegance...and she had balls of titanium...They're not mutually exclusive.

I think Callas was PROOF of that.

Do you really think of Maria as delicate or sylph-like. If you ask me, she was a pretty hard-ass, ballsy, New Yawk grrrrlll.

I mean have you ever listened to her interviews?

Yes, because biopics are always the best venue for serious consideration of someone's legacy and never have any tendency towards Oscar bait clichés. I mean, I think your film would be much more interesting but most biopics are such melodramatic crap that it seems futile to hope for anything else (though melodramatic crap can be entertaining, its primary goal is to entertain, not to do justice to the subject). Maybe it will be halfway decent and we can be pleasantly surprised.

Also, "soap opera" is an entertaining word choice here.

Harry, you can witter on as much as you like. The rope knot torture scene in Casino Royale was not censored in any way for British audiences. Has the nationality of the novelist, actor and two of the screenwriters concerned escaped your notice? Your prejudice makes you credulous.

amerjacquino; I know of many films where the P.C English censor is too twee to allow the delicate English to see the full force of violence or sex depicted if one directly compares identical the same scenes from a English DVD version of some film with another from other places. In many cases, it is a snip here, a snip there. I.E: Other counties had noticeably longer theatrical versions of Basic Instinct, Last Tango in Paris and the classic 'I Want to Live even back i the late 50's ....the English had not the climatic scene in it at all! So stop coming on like an expert in that field too, and yours bollocks ... I return in greater measure.

Next you will be claiming your wilting English Rose' can stand 45 degree C heat. I wonder where??????

Those bi-optics 'tell us what they want us to know in revisionist style and then also add extra 'invented history' as new fact. Someone was going to do one on Mario Lanza and put his death down to a fall out with Lucky Luciano in Italy. I can only suppose that , fell though. We have had one on Coco Chanel -which also conveniently dry cleaned some of her smelly Nazi associations.
Just the other night after watching Julie Andrews in Star! -the 'bio-pic of Gertrude Lawrence' and all the men in her life.... I decided to look up other bits about her. I came across a mention that the film eschewed 'her relationship' with Daphne du Maurier the author (of Rebecca fame). Miss Poppins and Maria's 'image' at the time could never have being associated with anything like THAT!

Perhaps those other facial 'botox blow ups' like Mickey Rourke might be a better choice or that Joyce Wilderstein... the 'tigress' lady. Maria was captioned the 'tigress' once.

Sanford ; I read on a film website where the delicate English were saved by the censors :from most of that Bond 'balls hanging through the bottom of the chair and getting hit with knotted rope' scene. It was drastically cut. My, their sweet peaches and cream complexions must blush, if they saw the full scene.! We know for a fact, they cannot even stand the summer sun on their rock pebble 'for sand' beaches. A 90degree F temperature is a drop dead temperature to them! Sh#t!!!!

Hey, I like this Tilda Swinton idea a lot. A lot of work will have to go into darkening her complexion but she could definitely pull it off.

"One thing we don’t need is for the film to fall into hagiography."

Oh, I hope so, too. I'd never be able to play the home version when it came out; it's been decades since I owned a hagiograph.

What we need is a serious biopic that concentrates on Callas'
great contribution to the opera world and how she came to be that wonderful singer, not another boring
Callas/Onassis soap opera or a silly Carmen fantasy.

A huge part of me would like to see Tilda Swinton play Callas. Does not look like her, but she has the passion the ability to transform herself into something very close to sylph-like, at once delicate and fierce.

And she is a lover of opera, also.

I am going to try as hard as I can to get a copy of this screenplay, just to see if it is melodramatic shite or something that feels "real." One thing we don't need is for the film to fall into hagiography.

Also, biopics don't have to be 100% true. They're boring like that. Have you seen Bright Star? One of the best, I'd say, and Jane Campion--out of necessity--made a lot of shit up. Of course, there is the risk of running with it and ending up with the masturbatory fantasy that Zeffirelli brought us.

Kashie: I didn't post the picture or green and Craig at all, just the address. Somehow it turned into the picture?? E strano! But I love it.

Anyone know how that could have happened?

Robert De Nero or Al Pacino as Onassis, two great actors who are short, intense men capable of dominance and huge outbursts.

It's impossible, of course, but the young Sophia Loren would have been perfect as Callas; a powerful actress with an exotic look who knew about lip synching because of her acting Aida to Tebaldi's voice in the '50s Italian film. Sadly, they were both young at exactly the same time.

Funny Girl might've been conceived with Bancroft in mind, but none of those songs were written for her voice. I sort of agree with Ethan Mordden's insinuation that Styne intentionally made the score beyond Bancroft, and firmly in keeping with what he'd observed to be Streisand's strengths.

God, this is going to be Super Gay Tuesday, if I'm going on about Funny Girl before 8:30 am.

What happened to the film version of Nicholas Gage's "Greek Fire" with Eva Mendes (eew, yeah, I know) as Callas? Still listed on the imdb.

Believe it or not, one person I could have seen as Callas was Meryl, but she's too mature now.

I suppose the same thing that an actress would. I was implying that Caballe might be able to act. What will Eva Green bring to the role of Callas? We've seen actresses with very impressive credentials stink at portraying her. I suppose I was just picking Caballe b/c she bore an uncanny resemblance to her not b/c she might be able to act but who says she cant'? Who the hell knows.

Yes, I liked Fanny Ardant.

One doesn't HAVE to be an opera singer to portrary Callas but there are a great many who could do her justice. I guess my point was that we've picked so many actresses to portray her that WHY NOT have an actual opera singer give her a go? I wonder who would be brave enough. hmmmm
