Gentlemen Prefer Regie

regie_05_30_02Who could be more qualified than Loge to declare, “It just seems to be screaming Walküre to me.” The production doing all that screaming was by Barrie Kosky for the Staatsoper Hannover. La Cieca trusts you too, cher public, will scream — this time with delight — when you divine which opera is represented after the jump.

Clearly, this is the Tankred Dorst production of Don Carlos:

Photo One – Carlos and Rodrigue pledge everlasting Friendship

Photo Two – The conclusion of the Auto da Fe: The Celestial Voice makes it presence known

Photo Three – When Princess Eboli refuses to be banished from the Court, Elisabeth administers a taser to force her to obey.

Someone’s been reading too much Eva Sedgewick and has decided to bring OUT the gay subtext — the two men in drag in the third pic bring new meaning to “opera queen.”

So we’re looking for an opera with a clear gay subtext. Some of the usual suspects have already been mentioned: Rigoletto, Ballo, Don Carlo. I’ll go with Otello.

    1. Iago and Cassio quarrel
    2. The ambassadors
    3. Iago and Otello.

You guys, it’s obviously [La Cieca, please insert correct opera title here]!!! But really, in today’s world this production could be anything… Probably one of the new productions replacing a Zeffirelli :P

  • I have actually seen this one. It didn’t all work but for the most part it was an interesting interpretation.

    The Magic Flute

Scene 2, the animal heads suggest the animals who follow Tamino’s flute )and oy, have you seen his flute?) and the guy in blue on his knees could be Monostatos.

Baritenor said it all: “Whatever it is, I hate it!”
