On wings of Regie

regie_05_16_01Finally, finally La Cieca devised a Regie quiz that really put the cher public on their mettle, and in fact, the only one of you even to narrow in on the right answer was 79CXR, whose wild guesses included a direct hit. The opera was Handel’s Hercules, as directed for the Luzerner Theater by Dominique Mentha. Now that your mental muscles are nicely warmed up, try to figure this one out.

Iolanthe, although it’s not likely the Germans would go for Gilbert and Sullivan.

      Donna Anna:

I’m not so sure that the Germans wouldn’t go for G&S….

I heard a tape of “Pirates of Penzance” done..Auf Duetche(sp?)..”Die Piraten”… a year or so ago, from a live performance, in Germany..and both the performers and the Audience seemed to be enjoying themselves very much…!

There’s a semi-famous recording of PoP auf Duetsche available that stars Martha Modl as Ruth and Arleen Auger as Mabel. I think Donald Grobe is Frederic. Oddly enough, they change the plot of the second act completely.

    LA BOHEME

#1 — Mimi realizes her lost key ploy has laid an egg, so she launches into the fake flowers bit, which she will augment by cross-pollinating a spray of gladioli.

#2 — Alcindoro tells Musetta she can get her own damn shoes.

#3 — ‘O Mimi, tu piu.’ Marcello upbraids Rodolfo for mooning over Miami when real love is staring him right in the face.

(Yes, I intended to write ‘Miami.’ Do you think I’d pass up a chance like that?)

    Traviata :

    1. Violetta : Follegiare di gioia in uova

    2. Germont : Piangi, o misera

    3. Violetta (gives Alfredo her best wig for the “pudica vergine”) : Nel ciel tra gli angeli

  • A. Poggia Turra says:

Clearly, this is the Tinto Brass production of Verdi’s Luisa Miller:

Photo One – Lusia sings “Abrani, abrani cor perfido”…

Photo Two – Wurm reminds the Count (in drag) that he knows what really happened to the Count’s dead brother…

Photo Three – Duke Frederick, in love with Rodolfo since childhood, also assumes drag in his attempt to win the love of the young man….

Far be it from me to interrupt a good wallow in the old Slough of Self-Pity or a Marathon Patting of One’s Own Back, but this is not the first time La Cieca has shown us all what dullards we are. Less than a year ago, I recall, La Calisto sent us all into the Vale of Shame where we were forced to eat the Cold Oatmeal of Regret and sleep on the Sheets of Self-Recrimination.

    OT Alert:

Just got wind of this You Tube and thought it worth sharing—

Here’s a young woman that I certainly hope will make it big! Corrine Winters is a student at The Academy for Vocal Arts in Philadelphia.

As far as I know, she will be spending at least another year there. Here, she is in a performance at a small operetta group that performs in the AVA Hall but is NOT really a part of AVA but does use the students (sometimes) in their concert performances of operettas. In the past year, they did Imre Kelman’s “Sari” in NYC as well as Philadlephia, .

Giuditta (1934) by Franz Lehár. Corinne Winters, soprano as Giuditta, and José Meléndez, music director, piano. Recorded on March 21, 2010.

Yep, she would, except (and VERY unusual for me, I keep looking at her face.) Then I hear her sing and I close my eyes. Hope she has what it takes, that’s all.
