As for the Netrebko clip, I withhold judgement based on just a few bars, but yeah, far better this role than, say, oh, I dunno, Anna Bolena?

It is Anna N doing what she does, whatever that kind of singing is called – and a personal matter if you like it or not.

What I find interesting is that she is planning to sing Elsa (Lohengrin) in Salzburg in 2013!

I’ll bet the horn player didn’t hear the end of THAT for days and days. Only one of the most famous horn solos in the repertoire…

Interesting that a big company like VO performs the Giraud-recitative version rather than the opera-comique spoken stuff (Recit before “Je dis” is Giraud’s, not Bizet’s). BTW, I’ve been corrected that most of the German-language houses today have adopted original language for opera, only Berlin’s Komische Oper still has a German-only preference.

I liked Elizabeth B-B. Those flame-thrower chest tones, people! Is it possible that she is already inked in to cover next season’s Fanciullas?

There are some very negative comments about Elizabeth B-B on opera-l.
One says that she could not be heard; another mentioned her scooping; her vulgar interpretation, bad acting and lack of temperament, etc.

I wonder if she sounded better on Sirius than in the house.

In Russia, they know how to take care of audience members who do not like E.B.B.!

It sounds like there’s a range of opinions on EB-B’s Tosca last night. I listened on REalplayer and it seemed like an impressive sounding voice. I wasn’t crazy though over the heavily vibratoed middle register. Either that or lack of imagination caused very little in the way of creative phrasing. And she made less than most with her use of text. Much of the middle range singing was very thick and sludge-y sounding.

But on the other hand, the top seems very impressive, very full and important sounding.

Could it be that her voice lacks focus so that it sounds big and full on the radio/internet stream but doesn’t really carry well in the house?

I agree with the posters that suggest her for Minnie, if she can add the personality for the role, she seems a likely candidate in a not too crowded field of choices.

Isn’t it funny, Richard. I heard EBB’s voice exactly the opposite
of your hearing!! Just amazing. I found her vibrato somewhat
pronounced, but not troublesome, and her middle ‘working’ voice
sounded full and warm; on the other hand, as the evening wore
on I thought the top sounded, at B-natural and high-C, really
quite screamy, as did the ending of Vissi d’arte, which at least
was steady; she’s the best Tosca of the season, so far I think, and
if she stays in the run she’ll be a lot better. After all, she went on
with something less than a half-hour’s notice!
