to quote my massage therapist: there’s quality in nudity.
I always love to hear JJ on the radio. Is there any hope that La Cieca can interview him for a podcast?
If the tenors can “double up” in Armida, such an interview should be possible!
I don’t believe in nudity in art unless Jonas Kaufmann is a participant.
How timely – I just received the DVD of Ercole su’l Termodonte from Netflix. Prompting the inevitable question, “Yes, but can he sing?”
James makes a very good point about the awkwardness of the “replacement bras” for the HD presentation of Tales of Hoffmann. If the decision to present performers with naughty bits showing was made on a strong artistic basis, why alter the presentation?
Partial nudity too has its strong artistic justifications in opera. Think of Samuel Ramey singing Attila with his chest, abdomen and arms exposed. The partial nudity there enabled him to project his characterization as strongly as possible. The total effect would have been much different had he been clad in a turtle neck.
Nothing could help Attila -no
matter how you dressed.
