Regie unleashed

regie_11_22_03Right the first time, WindyCityOperaMan! Last week’s Regie quiz was indeed Das Rheingold — as envisioned by Barrie Kosky for Staatsoper Hannover. You will forgive La Cieca for saying that either the quizzes are getting too easy or the cher public are getting too smart! As such, your doyenne has put her back into it a bit this week, seeking a somewhat less familiar title for your perusal.

Remember, all: if you actually recognize this staging, hush, or risk redaction!

Hint: this is not a production of Zar Hund Zimmermann.

    Henze’s The English Cat?

This is the most brilliant Turandot Konzept I’ve seen!

1)Timur kisses the Prince of Persia goodbye, with ballgown Liu looking on (they were exiled from Liu’s senior prom, don’t you know?)

    2) Turandot plots her next move with Ping, Pang, and Pong. If I had to take a guess, said move would be revenge on her costumer.

    3) Ping, Pang, and Pong offer Calaf (who is somehow older than Timur) the world if he’ll give up his name.

Indeed, photo number two could be Trebs just realising she left her kid on the bus on her way home from Dunking Donuts, but that isn’t an opera. I somehow suspect this is belcanto: is picture number two yet another attempt at portraying Queen Elizabeth I in a new and original way? Picture one could be Hanna Kennedy, Mary Stuart and Leicester so I’ll guess Maria Stuarda.

I have been to France, visited Cornwall and darted through Kent. But still I speak as his Master’s fool. Alas I am no Duke or Earl. Gloucester has half day closing on Tuesdays.

But I think I have caught Goneril. It’s very painful..

    I blame Regan.

  • Loge says:

I don’t know why but it seems to have a Pique Dame feel about it.
