fawlty regie
Despite a few doubters among you, our most recent Regie quiz was (marginally) guessable, as Doug D. demonstrated. The opera is indeed Cavalli’s Eliogabalo, and it looks as if a good time was had by all at Grange Park Opera.
These people too look like they’re having a hell of a time. But what (relatively less obscure) opera are they in?

Juding by pic 3, it’s Le torri di Fawlty”.
Hansel and Gretel
Faust, of course.
Pic 1: Act 1, Faust has a vision of Marguerite.
Pic 2: The famous waltz, “Ainsi que la brise legere…” Due to budget constraints incurred by the elaborate staging, the full chorus has been replaced by one soprano, one alto, one tenor and one bass to complement the major characters. Chorus doesn’t add much in the way of Konzept anyway, as any Regie Direktor knows.
Pic 3: The final trio, “Alerte! Alerte!”
This one’s a pushover:
Picture 1) Peer Gynt’s first meeting with Solveig.
Picture 2 In the hall of the Mountain King.
Picture 3 Peer is shipwrecked but meets Solveig who redeems him.
Q.E.D. Werner Egk’s Peer Gynt!
Ring Cycle
1. Das ist kein Mann!
2. Ride of the Valkyries
3. Siegmund and Sieglinde think about how to get around Hunding. . .
Oh, of course!
It’s Mefistofele.
1. Faust and Elena
2. Witches’ Sabbath on Brocken mountain.
3. The prison scene.
Ballo in Maschera.
1. Ulrica tells Sylvano about his upcoming promotion.
2. Amelia hangs from the ceiling in shock on taking Renato’s name out of the urn, as Oscar trills the invitation to the ball.
3. Riccardo, dying, tells Renato Amelia is innocent and urges him to take her away from all this. (Or, in this production, votes them off the island.)
… or The Rake’s Progress …
Postcard from Morocco?
Relativeky less obscure…hmm. Francesca di Rimini? (Rachmoninoff or Zandonai…I’m not sure which.)
Britten’s Midsummer Night’s Dream?
