David Utterback (#60) — did Callas wear a hump for Rigoletto?
I was there last night & Angela was lovely. She didn’t sound matronly at all & was very charming. The tenor was ummmm not great. He was the worst thing about the show. She was perfectly audible more then usual actually.
I was there last night. I’ll sum up my reaction with this story:
Following an AG aria the guy next to me shouted “Bravo!” and I turned to him and said “Really?!?”.
She finished strong(er) but sounded pretty dreadful from the family circle.
Given her history of not wanting to show up for rehearsals, why should I have not taken it at face value? After all, she got fired from the Lyric just for that reason.
David Utterback: You should have heard the prima of the Onegin revival this year. The Nurse had EVERY line fed to her. Tatiana’s bedroom scene became a crowded trio. And the Nurse wasn’t the only one. The prompter really earned her salary that night. What’s worse is that by the time of the Saturday broadcast, the Nurse still hadn’t bothered to learn her lines.
Lindoro, thst’s exactly why you shouldn’t have taken it seriously. It was clearly someone writing a post from her mindset to point out how stupid she is.
Kashania, for what it’s worth: Jane Shaulis, who was singing Filipyevna that night, was replacing an ill singer at the last minute. That was the only performance she sang of Onegin this season
Giordano and Gheorgiu were just interviewed on sirius during the Rigoletto intermission. They were charming…
I missed the first act of this Rigoletto but I’m looking forward to hearing some Calleja and Damrau in Act two.
68: did you notice that Massimo Giordano was subbing in the intermission for José Cura, who’s “not feeling well”? I wonder what that means for tomorrow’s Cav/Pag?
I did hear that G & G were replacements for Cura but I didn’t realize he has a show tomorrow.
Natalie Dessay was the guest for the second intermission. I know that many people around here seem to hate her for it but I really appreciate her candor. She is so refreshingly un-sunny.
