Texted from the Met a few minutes ago:

During act 2 (still going on) a stage hand walked out in the middle of Tristan and Isolde’s first duet to move her yellow gown away from the torch and ensure it didn’t light! Meier and Seiffert just kept singing…

“blah blah blah” is exactly what I think, too, Sr. Jacquino! I’ve not heard the Illuminations, but that would be the right repertory for the Oxon. tenor. More power to him — if he gets it right! A voice though? Even Peter Pears was less objectionable. Has nothing to do with nationality.
    Style, yes.

And it is not only English Tenors who object to Ian Bostridge … Even poor old Moreschi sings with more balls.

mrmyster, we think you’re nice and literate, too, along with Mrs Gundryggia, though you certainly got carried away there. Still, for your sake and a few others we put up with the national-obsessive nasties and just lie low when they bite.

But I will admit we have this cathedral-tenor-problem-thing (along with tweety sopranos who sing like trebles). Nice when a tenor can break away from all that – as I heard Toby Spence do recently (he’s getting very butch in his old age, sang the best ‘il mio tesoro’ I’ve heard in concert or on stage – and we’ve had some rotten ones recently). Mark Padmore, though infintely preferable to IB, still often sounds as if he’s just had sand kicked in his face.
