OK, Deanna Durbin sang Nessun in the 40s in one of her movies. It’s on utube. I have trouble with a woman singing a song about wanting to win the love of a woman who has beheaded all her male lovers. Odd gender bending. I suppose a regie version of Turnadot could include a guy got as A..nejad to be the Prince of Persia. Go ahead and behead him.
Sorry I got all the Don Giovanni names wrong (it was me, not Cocky). musicalcriticism.com has the background, and also notes that “The quality of Ian Bostridge’s voice as well as his stage persona were excellently suited to the role of Don Ottavio. Bostridge sang his arias with subdued beauty and supported his Donna Anna with utmost consideration.” So I guess I must have got that wrong too…

I too saw that review of Bostridge and was alarmed to say the least. Makes me disinclined to read anything else that particular lady has written. I don’t think opera can be her natural metier.
Apparently, Dorothea Röschmann is moving into jugendlich-dramatisches territory: she has sung Eva in Meistersinger this spring and for this season she has both the Feldmarschallin and Elsa on her schedule. Although I’d be interested to hear the results, I’m more worried about the possible damage these roles will do to her voice…
