“A bare-chested prisoner, suspended upside down from a rope tied to his ankles, is pushed back and forth by brutish guards with clubs as if he were a human piñata.”

See what happens when leather queens get a hold of an opera?
reading the review, it sounds fascinating…and gives me a slightly more optomestic feeling about the coming Mortier regime….
this is exactly what the nyc music scene needs…I love the classics, but we are desparately in need of a shot in the arm of unknown/little/known/forgotten works..
hope it makes it to ny!
Meanwhile, the dire Daniel J. Wakin has duly filed the article about JDF’s “surprise” encore that Mr. Gelb and the press office suggested. The article will guarantee that there is a “spontaneous” repeat of the big aria at every FILLE performance.
The only question being, will Barry Banks be allowed to encore it too, even without a Decca contract?
How handy for an opera company to command the docile services of the one major newspaper in its market.
Bryan Hymel as Tom in The Rake’s Progress.
I think you need to add “schwul, schwul, schwul” to the tags on this one as well for this sentence:
“In this performance the text was spoken, with occasional half-sung phrases, by the American baritone Dale Duesing, dressed in drag like a 1920s Berlin cabaret singer, with the band nearby. During the course of his recitation, which broke into bouts of hectoring, Mr. Duesing gradually changed costumes, slowly putting on the striped uniform of a concentration-camp prisoner.”
First of all, who knew that Dale was still out there? Second of all, well, he definitely is a suitable topic of discussion here (see suggested yahoo tag). Third of all check out the tats on Evgeny Nikitin – are those real? I remember in the concert version of “The Demon” he had a spider tattooed on his hand which seemed very appropriate for the part. He is also a good Pogner in “Meistersinger”… I wonder if Evgeny is a Gergiev protegé, if ya know what I mean?
Back in the day when Cinco de Mayo celebrations were held at J’s Hangout.
Tony’s suggestion to pair Il Prigionero with Suor Angelica certainly merits the schwul schwul schwul tag. Nathan Gunn can teach an abs class afterwards.
I suppose it gives gameful employment to Merritt and Plowright.
Sounds like the ‘Fire Island Opera Festival’ has come to town —
A companion piece for Prigionero? If Tony Tommy did a little research, he’d find Dallapiccola’s own “Volo di Notte” might fit the (double) bill quite nicely. The easy set-change from a filthy prison to a filthy air traffic control center would suit even the most budget-minded administrator. I think Frankfurt did the two together a couple years ago.
