Simply everyone chimes in today about Monday night’s Met in the Parks recital at Central Park SummerStage. JJ has one take, Anthony Tommasini quite another, and for depth of detail, you need look no further than Our Own Sanford:
Fascinating TV show from Rome, 1958, featuring a sort of operatic "What's My Line?" with Toti dal Monte in a Dorothy Kilgallen-style mask. An almost 70 year-old Tito Schipa appears...
Thank you for posting this interview. I’m impressed and moved by Angel Blue’s way of balancing a popular way of speaking with thoughtful commentary about her voice and why the art form is...
With only one more opera this year (Salome), it's time to look forward to next year. The most fun event will be seeing this lady back on stage. Only one performance has been announced for...
A brilliant Gluck moment occurs in Ezio. Between all the arias comes this fierce trio. One of my favorite Gluck moments. Out of the three recordings I know I like Stoehr (No. 1) best:
I always love singers doing a blind test. Konstantin Krimmel gets a lot of recordings right straight away
The Lyric Opera of Chicago has shared the Civic Opera House (now renamed the Lyric Opera House) with the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago since the 2021-22 season. The Joffrey Ballet's marathon run...
Yup. Callas only ever sang Cio Cio San at LOC and Bing would hardly have needed her in the role when he had Tebaldi, Albanese, de los Angeles, Stella and Kirsten around.
Me too. Love it, no, but I’ve been recommending it to a lot of opera-curious friends and they’ve enjoyed it. This movie was made for the masses (-ish), not true lovers of the artist. If it brings...

Thank you for mentioning her Pamina. I had always wanted to hear her in the part.
She was an excellent Violetta. I also saw (and liked) her as Pamina.
So did I. I just don’t think anyone can really make a movie about Callas that leaves most opera lovers happy. I will say I much prefer it over the McNally Callas related plays.
She also could have been kinder to herself, relaxed some and attended non-stop fabulous dinner parties with the throngs of gay men who adored her. What I would have done to hear her sing “Stormy...
😮😮😮😂
Point of reference re: Steinberg’s review - the two roles that Bing asked Callas to sing interchangeably were Lady Macbeth and Violetta, not Cio-Cio San and Violetta. Not quite the daredevil, fire...

Not bad but I always go to Jussi Bjorling for O Helga Nat.

Thanks for this insight. During that Butterfly hallucination, I kept wondering, where in Paris is this??
A fun cast, and like all the Chereau Elektrae full of easter eggs Klytämnestra: Evelyn Herlitzius Elektra: Iréne Theorin Chrysothemis: Vida Miknevičiūtė Aegisth: Stephan Rügamer Orest: Lauri Vasar...
