Solid gold

Mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard has been named the recipient of the sixth annual Beverly Sills Artist Award for young singers at the Metropolitan Opera. She receives a $50,000 prize and is married to Teddy Tahu Rhodes, which frankly strikes La Cieca as overkill. (Photo: Marty Sohl/Metropolitan Opera)

Czar quality

Congratulations to director Stephen Wadsworth, who was just named Seattle Opera’s Artist of the Year, an honor that, given Speight Jenkins‘ celebrated distaste for publicity, obviously has nothing whatsoever to do with Wadsworth’s recently inheriting the Met’s high-profile production, HD telecast, etc. of Boris Godunov. La Cieca hears that John Relyea has been named the recipient of the fourth annual Beverly Sills Artist Award for young singers at the Metropolitan Opera. The bass was presented with the accolade in his dressing room last night before his performance of Rossini’s La Cenerentola.
