Salome is better in translation
Richard Strauss adapted Oscar Wilde’s original 1891 French libretto into a 1907 French revision of Salome, unfortunately not often performed.
A complete recording of Salome sung in French, conducted by Massimiliano Caldi with Sofia Soloviy as Salome exists, but is not a well-known recording. The recording is well-worth investigating, as Strauss’s adaptation of Wilde’s original French libretto adapts itself beautifully to Strauss’s incomparable score. Soloviy is quite good as Salome, encompassing the myriad demands of the score with aplomb, singing the text with considerable skill and the nuance required for singing in French. This recording makes a good case for Salome to be performed in French more often than it currently is.
