Earlier this spring, Lithuanian soprano Vida Miknevičiūtė became the talk of the town when she was announced as taking over the role of Minnie from Sondra Radvanovsky in the Met’s upcoming new production of Fanciulla. Fresh off a run as Strauss’s Empress in Aix, Miknevičiūtė next joins Claus Guth’s production of Walküre as Sieglinde in Hamburg, the role in which we hear her today.
Her Siegmund is American tenor Eric Cutler who has cut his heldentenor teeth in Europe following early career outings in Mozart and bel canto repertoire. (He was the Arturo to Netrebko’s Elvira, remember?)
Cutler sings Bacchus in the Salzburg Festival’s Ariadne auf Naxos, which opens on Sunday. He then returns to Zurich for performances of Tannhäuser and he’ll reunite with Miknevičiūtė for performances of Walküre in January. But while New York audiences will have the chance to hear Miknevičiūtė’s Sieglinde when Gianandrea Noseda brings the forces of the Zurich Opera to Carnegie Hall next spring for a concert Ring cycle, Cutler has other plans: first Lohengrin in Berlin and then Parsifal in Dresden.
