Barrie Kosky’s new production of Die Frau ohne Schatten in Aix this summer, which will be broadcast on 13 July, features a high-profile Festival debut in place of Tamara Wilson’s cancelled Dyer’s Wife: Canadian soprano Ambur Braid (who in turn cancelled singing the title role in Bard’s production of Die Ägyptische Helena, to be replaced by Hailey Clark).

Braid’s career has traced an interesting arc from coloratura to dramatic; in 2016, the Queen of the Night was a “signature role,” but a decade later, she’s making the rounds as Senta, Salome, and Katerina Izmailova, and has plans to return to the Dyer’s Wife in Cleveland next spring. She previously sang the role in Lyon in 2023, a sample of which is available on Youtube.

This week, Parterre Box features Braid in a bit of her old repertoire, a performance of Roberto Devereux in Frankfurt, where she was an ensemble member, recorded in 2018.

Since then, in addition to taking on new repertoire, Braid also appeared as the soprano singing Salome in the production directed by Amanda Seyfriend’s Jeanine in the 2023 Atom Egoyan movie Seven Veils.
