I was impressed by the Das Rheingold and enjoyed the Götterdämmerung, but the Die Walküre did not really do it for me. I was not sure why. Was it the performances (though the casting is strong)? Was I simply “Ring cycle” over by that time? Perhaps I would have enjoyed it better with a full score to follow along? I certainly enjoyed later versions – particularly those on video (the Chéreau Ring and the Otto Schenk Met cycle). Perhaps I just needed to “see” it to get it. I certainly know my favorite part of the Ring and would recommend it as an introduction to Wagner. Maybe I just need to go back and revist the Solti verions with my wisdom (?) of older age.
