In fact, IMHO the video performance is much better than the CD. Filmed in Ely Cathedral (with an audience), the excellent camera work takes full advantage of the space, and the acoustic seem to add a special glow to Norman’s voice. (Listen to the a cappella section of “In The Deep Midwinter” that combines the pure voices of the Ely Choristers with her rich yet floating tone.)
The arrangements by conductor Robert DeCormier are both fresh and familiar (including a new song by Donald Fraser especially written for Norman) and use the full range of her voice from rich contralto to soaring soprano. However, it is the chance to “see” Norman that makes it extra special. Her always expressive voice registers a gamut of emotions, and the look of exaltation at 27:37 alone makes this essential viewing.
