In theory, I’d prefer a purely choral performance (admittedly my preference for most Christmas songs and carols) and this has been recorded many times by both soloists and ensembles, but this is the one that I keep coming back to — and not just because it was my first. There’s something about this performance in particular (mostly in the phrasing, I think) that perfectly captures a hushed tranquility that I savor on a winter evening.

This has been my favorite Christmas song since I first heard this performance, the opening track of Malena Ernman‘s first Christmas album.
