Who knew you could have so many different takes on one opera? “The Rats” interpretation was infamous for its audacity. Who are the rats? Why are their tails getting longer? Is Lohengrin a rat trying to free himself from a maze? I love this production for so many of its attributes, including the luscious colors that contrast with the sterile atmosphere of a scientists lab. I am not a fan of either Vogt or Dasch. Over time, I have gotten used to his ethereal sound, but I will never cross the aisle for Annette. The conducting just lets the music speak for itself. This is one of my all time favorite operas, and I never tire of listening to it. The overture alone is a worthy masterpiece.
