The only Bob Wilson production I have seen live is not one for which he will be everlastingly famous, but his Le trouvère, the French Trovatore, has been unforgettable for me since I saw it in Parma in 2018. In a work with such complicated plot machinations, it was invigorating and engrossing to see plot so fully severed from drama through focus on simple gesture and the music. At every turn, the preconceived notion of Trovatore was denied, right down to the boxing during the ballet. It wasn’t the greatest production of anything I’ve ever seen, but it was a wonderful education in a different way to watch opera as an audience member. It’s unfortunate that no full recording of it appears to have been made.
I’m still thinking about Bob Wilson’s Le trouvère
