L’italiana in Algeri, despite the presence of some cultural elements which are of their time, is a witty, hilarious take on the Rettungsoper, minus the sturm und drang of Fidelio or Dalibor. Yes, one needs a contralto with comic chops and a great bel canto technique, but we still get one or two of those per generation, so the opera should really be offered more often.

This may be a rather trite choice, but I genuinely believe that Rossini comedies make the ultimate comfort operas.
