There’s something about witnessing such a perfectly and extravagantly realized story of an ordinary soldier’s mental breakdown that makes me think: (1) even the humblest man is worthy of the deepest sympathy and the most lavish artistic representation; (2) you can do anything in opera as long as you sing it; (3) whatever minor disaster happens to me, I won’t end up like Wozzeck.
