It *is* a dark ending, with many deaths, the downfall of a powerful anti-hero, and engages with the general verismo themes of family loyalty, honor (or the lack thereof), revenge, catastrophe, and death. Mascagni’s uniquely Sicilian music, drenched in the same themes, fits the movie like a glove.
