When Anthony Minghella directed his film adaptation of Patricia Highsmith‘s book, he added in a few minor details — including a new character for Cate Blanchett to play — and an overall more romantic and overly homoerotic take on a probable psychopath. But his best addition is the trip to the opera in Rome for Tom Ripley masquerading as Dickie Greenleaf. Eugene Onegin is onstage, and Minghella shows us the duel between Lensky and Onegin where one friend kills another. (Sound familiar?) Sure, it is thematically on the nose, but Ripley seems a bit troubled, or moved, or perhaps aroused by the proceedings, and in the process both works become 200% more gay.
