The memory of the Puritani duet stayed in the recesses of my mind like a fever dream (which I guess is what Fitzcarraldo is) even after I had forgotten the rest of the film before rediscovering it much later. It sums up the outlandishness of the operatic obsession in such a simple, striking way.

The use of Puritani in Fitzcarraldo is favorite example of the use of opera to signify magnificent obsesssions. And is there any more magnificent (if colonialistic) obsession than bringing opera to the remotest part of the Amazon? Fitzcarraldo is a great film and I still remember my shock and awe when I first saw it. Spoiler alert, this clip is from the end of the movie.
