The biggest surprise of 2024 for me was that the performance of Messiaen’s Saint François d’Assise that I travelled to Geneva to see did not put me right to sleep. Indeed, after five and a half hours I felt like I wanted to see the whole damn thing, including un “orchestre de plus de 100 musiciens, un chœur de plus de 100 chanteurs, une distribution incroyable, une scénographie monumentale” and the ondes martinots again.

That it has been at least considered by the Met is attested to by the fact that it is listed in Future Met wiki under “unknown seasons.” In short, it is incredible that one of the masterpieces of the 20th century has never been performed in New York. Should the Met consider putting it on at the Park Avenue Armory it would be the event of the season.
