Voilà. Norma, on m’a déjà demandé de la faire. Et j’ai un contrat pour chanter Norma dans l’avenir. Norma, pour moi, c’est intéressant parce que Norma, on peut y entendre toutes sortes de voix. Par exemple une Norma très lourde, une voix pour Aïda par exemple, vraiment verdienne, pleine, riche, « corposa », une voix très grande. Mais on peut aussi y entendre des mezzos comme une Cecilia Bartoli qui a chanté Norma. Et aussi des sopranos lyriques légers comme Beverly Sills par exemple. . . . Je dois la faire avec ma voix, mes possibilités, les choses que je fais bien et ne pas essayer d’être une autre personne, d’être une autre artiste.

During his 20 year career as an opera critic he wrote for the New York Times, Opera, Gay City News, Opera Now, Musical America and the New York Post. He also raised his voice in punditry on National Public Radio. From time to time he directed opera, including three unsuccessful productions of Don Giovanni. He also contributed a regular column on opera for the New York Observer. James died in October 2023.
