At Opera Philadelphia, baritone Jarrett Ott, recently praised by Opera News as a “rising star” with “a voice that is polished and immaculately produced,” will replace Nathan Gunn as protagonist W.P. Inman for all five performances of Cold Mountain, February 5-14 at the Academy of Music.  

This summer, the celebrated Bel Canto at Caramoor series presents the centuries-overdue American premiere of Rossini’s Aureliano in Palmira as well as Beethoven’s sole opera, Fidelio.

Conductor Jaap van Zweden will become the New York Philharmonic’s next Music Director, beginning in 2018–19.

La Cieca

James Jorden (who wrote under the names "La Cieca" and "Our Own JJ") was the founder and editor of parterre box. During his 20 year career as an opera critic he wrote for the New York Times, Opera, Gay City News, Opera Now, Musical America and the New York Post. He also raised his voice in punditry on National Public Radio. From time to time he directed opera, including three unsuccessful productions of Don Giovanni. He also contributed a regular column on opera for the New York Observer. James died in October 2023.
