Jonas Kaufmann has canceled his performance as Don José in Bizet’s Carmen for this Wednesday, March 4, because he is suffering from the flu and was unable to travel to New York as scheduled on Sunday. He hopes to recover in time to fly here later this week and perform as schedule[d] on Saturday, March 7 matinee. In his place, Yonghoon Lee, who will be singing the title role in Verdi’s Don Carlo later this month, has agreed to sing Don José on Wednesday.” Sad news from the Met press office.

La Cieca

James Jorden (who wrote under the names "La Cieca" and "Our Own JJ") was the founder and editor of parterre box. During his 20 year career as an opera critic he wrote for the New York Times, Opera, Gay City News, Opera Now, Musical America and the New York Post. He also raised his voice in punditry on National Public Radio. From time to time he directed opera, including three unsuccessful productions of Don Giovanni. He also contributed a regular column on opera for the New York Observer. James died in October 2023.
