They’re wrong.  And what does La Cieca do when she sees a particularly memorable image? She defaces it, of course, and she naturally expects that you, the cher public, will do the same.

So, on with our “Long Live Passion” Photoshop Competition!

First, download the original of the above photo by right-clicking here: [LONG LIVE PASSION].

Then retouch, revamp and otherwise renovate it as you see fit.  Then email your finished image to La Cieca at [email protected] and she will insert them into a forthcoming posting.

Prize packages consisting of a selection of recent opera releases will be awarded to winners in two categories: Most Expert (i.e., best, most undetectable Photoshopping skills) and Most Scathing (which should be self-explanatory). The competition begins now and will continue through midnight, Sunday October 9, with the winners to be announced on Monday, October 10.

Here’s an example to get you started.

La Cieca

James Jorden (who wrote under the names "La Cieca" and "Our Own JJ") was the founder and editor of parterre box. During his 20 year career as an opera critic he wrote for the New York Times, Opera, Gay City News, Opera Now, Musical America and the New York Post. He also raised his voice in punditry on National Public Radio. From time to time he directed opera, including three unsuccessful productions of Don Giovanni. He also contributed a regular column on opera for the New York Observer. James died in October 2023.
