riccardo_mutiRiccardo Muti‘s recent fainting spell that resulted in surgery for a broken jaw was caused by a” heart rhythm disturbance,” say his doctors. The conductor has been fitted with a pacemaker to regulate his heart rate, and is expected to make a full recovery.

In a statement released by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association, Muti said, “I think it was destiny that I came to Chicago and I think what has happened is also destiny, because now I understand and feel more comfortable than ever about returning to my work.”

During his 20 year career as an opera critic he wrote for the New York Times, Opera, Gay City News, Opera Now, Musical America and the New York Post. He also raised his voice in punditry on National Public Radio. From time to time he directed opera, including three unsuccessful productions of Don Giovanni. He also contributed a regular column on opera for the New York Observer. James died in October 2023.
