    Happy b.Day, Anthony Dean!

You should be so proud of yourself and the great thing you’ve managed to accomplish in your career, starting from where you once did.

Once, a long time ago, I sat directly behind you and your great teacher, Mrs. Beverley Johnson, at the doctoral recital program of Faith Esham at Juilliard, just by utter chance, and can STILL remember someone coming up to speak with Mrs. Johnson and her immediate speaking up of you in the proudest fashion and saying: “You’re going to hear from this one next!”, or words to that effect.

You looked so shy and still so green at it all, and just a little abashed at the effusive way in which Mrs. Johnson enthusiastically endorsed you. At that moment I wanted so much to lean over and give you a big hug and say to you:

“It’s all going to work out, honey; don’t worry too much; it’s a tough row to hoe but you’ll make it as you’ve got the goods.” And, I was right! You did it!

So, many more years of singing to you,( and thank you for taking care of Mrs. Johnson in her latter years, certainly very good karma for you) — and most of all —

here’s that big hug I wanted to give you so long ago, albeit only a virtual one.

    Yours sincerely,
    Camille

Sad news: the wonderful jazz pianist Barbara Carroll has died at 92. I just saw her play her regular Saturday night gig at Birdland a few weeks ago..turns out it was one of her final performances. She was brilliant as ever.

Great pianist. Always very friendly and knew how to work a room.

Jonas Kaufmann cancels Mondays concert at the Barbican -- he was due to sing The Four Last Songs (!!) and other lieder. I saw him on Wednesday when he sand Act I of Walküre with Karita Mattila. She was sensational -- he was…restrained and he had difficulty riding above the splendid LSO (Pappano). I was in row K of the Stalls and cannot imagine that people could hear him in the Balcony.

However, it seems he was wonderful in the Paris Lohengrin, so maybe he is just unwell.

I have my fingers crossed, because that Don Carlos in November is very tempting. Any idea if it might be live streamed?
