lori_phillips_thumbTonight Lori Phillips will make her Met debut as Senta in Der Fliegende Holländer, replacing Deborah Voigt, who is ill.

Here’s Ms. Phillips singing Fidelio.

Perhaps I’ve chosen the wrong night as my introduction to this opera.

Usitalo – Worst singing I’ve ever heard at the MET – bar none.

You guys & Idia! —what a bunch of crabs! I was thinking how much better this Dutchman is sounding, by all singers, than the earlier perfs. Uusitalo is still a mess, but a better mess then before – (I kept thinking about George London),
even Gould is less offensive than at the opening – and Deborah Voigt
(no ‘h’ pls.), sounds more in tune than I have heard her in a long
while, maybe because that is because Senta is Lori Phillips, who thus
far is a pleasant surprise. I’ve not heard her before. She seems very
into the role and singing with point and passion – I missed the ballade
because I was serving dinner, but what I have heard is fine. Is this Phillips’
Met debut? She could be useful, even tho’ she’s no spring chicken.
BTW, I was listening to some Met Wagner broadcasts from the 1930s the
other day, and also a Samson from 1949, and the prompters were
in full cry. Nothing new in that – it comes with the territory. It frequently
has nothing to do with faulty memorization by singers, rather it may
have to do with pacing the performance. I certainly think it is a shame
that the Met did not bother to have more consideration than to bring
back the Finn bass, after his shockingly bad J. the B. in Salome — there are
obviously better Dutchmans available — Alan Held comes to mind — as does Mark Delavan, whom the Met seems to have forgotten about, unfortunately. Any of you SFO folks hear Mark’s SFSO Dutchman some years ago – a fine performance, and he has the pipes.
Phillips is a little ‘sticky’ here and there, but this is a sub. performance; give
her the run and she would sound as good as anyone the Met has had in
      the role in recent memory.

        prompting “frequently
has nothing to do with faulty memorization by singers, rather it may
have to do with pacing the performance”

Thanks for that. Your explanation makes sense.

I didn’t see Delavan’s Dutchman, but did catch his Wotan 2 years ago. Looking forward to more from him this summer.

Held received very fine notices for his first “Dutchman” in D.C. a few seasons back–it would have been great having him on board the ship at The Met (Wagner seems to be his best repertoire). However, he had Wagner concerts in St. Louis this past weekend with Christine Brewer (anybody hear it?)and has also been involved in that L.A. Ring (I hear the artists aren’t too happy with that one).

Delavan, as you note, had a fine success with the Dutchman in the concerts (semi-staged I believe) in S.F. a few years back. I think, however, that he’s in Europe singing his first Walkure Wotans before bringing them to S.F. in a few weeks. Even if they were contacted maybe these guys just weren’t available when the Met started planning this revival of “Dutchman”.

    • papopera says:

you mean worst than Kurt Baum ?

      • BETSY_ANN_BOBOLINK says:

Poor Kurt always gets a bum rap. He wasn’t really all that bad. Looks-wise, of course, he’d have to bribe his way into the “pleasantlookingentenor” category. No, much as I admire her as a person, I would think the “worst singing at The Met” would belong to Andrea Gruber’s Turandot.

  • Clita del Toro says:

Quanto: It’s expression und drama , silly. (it’s not supposed to be funny!). LOL

    I didn’t especially like You-who, U-u in Salome–now I know why-hu!

  • enzo says:

That’s Kirsten Flagstad in the Fidelio clip! One of the greatest voices in the Met’s history.

Harteros as Senta? Are you serious?

  • enzo says:

I meant the Fidelio clip with the picture of Flagstad as Sieglinde – not the Fidelio clip at the top of the thread.

  • Clita del Toro says:

If I don’t like Ms. Phillips, I am going to watch “Moon over Miami” with Betty on TCM!

  • A. Poggia Turra says:

Oh oh – it sounds like the Met men’s chorus has caught a case of Uusititis….

  • CruzSF says:

was that the prompter we just heard?

    • IdiaLegray says:

The prompter is really audible tonight. Tacky!

    • suzyQ says:

The prompter was also audible during Voight’s performance.

      • CruzSF says:

Two forgetful Sentas in a row? Everyone must be flagged as the season winds down.

        • peter says:

Usitalo, weren’t we supposed to have a replacement for him? I actually think Phillips is an improvement over Voigt, once she got passed the ballad, which was pretty scary.

  • Nerva Nelli says:

The point, Marie Theres’, is that in your universe “Harteros will be the best Senta of course” when she does.

“Varady Varady Varady Damrau Damrau Damrau Insult Racette Insult Racette Insult Racette Harteros Harteros Harteros Roeschmann Roeschmann Roeschmann…”
