  • Feldmarschallin says:

according to the New York Times he needs surgery and will be unavailable for at least 6 weeks.

  • pernille says:

Best wishes to him for a full recovery!

  • Tenorfach says:

And as per usual the sheer arrogance of ROH – not a word from them on the website, facebook – barely a mention in the UK press!!

Good luck to Domingo! Hope you recover well and completely!

    • browser says:

They were told yesterday morning, so I don’t think you could call this arrogance. They are probably putting everything in place for a proper anouncement, and preparing a policy for partial refunds, or whatever, for those partrons who have bought the more expensive Domingo tickets.

      • browser says:

Have looked at this again. Well, cetainly Reuters a Press Release from Covent Garden, and they had already issued a credit note to ticket holders by that time; so I can’t quite see where the arrogance lies here…

      • La marquise de Merteuil says:

ROH don’t refund tickets – particularly on basis of buying to see a performer.

  • CruzSF says:

I hope he recovers completely. Regardless of one’s stance on whether he has stayed on stage too long, I hope no one wishes him ill.

  • schweigundtanze says:

Warmest wishes for a complete and speedy recovery.

  • Sarah says:

    Get well soon.

  • manou says:

Absolutely – I have tickets to see him both this Friday (“In Conversation”) and on March 5th (Tamerlano) and I wish him the best of luck and the best of health.

  • Fox von Lerchenau says:

I obviously wish Mr. Domingo the very best for a full and quick recovery, but I also think it’s no bad thing that the Royal Opera House might have to reconsider its obsessesion with operatic celebrity. (Remember the reprehensible stand-alone Pagliacci put on in his honour, with an artificial interval squeezed into maximize bar receipts?) Anyway, two productions of operas for which he is so obviously not suited show that they’ll put anything on for him. Granted, the idea of having one of the 20th Century’s great Otellos singing Handel with a period instrument orchestra had a certain delicious ridiculousness about it, but the whole Boccanegra thing is beyond me. And I also mean that quite literally: if Domingo’s involved it will make tickets impossible to come by.

Well, it’s swings and roundabouts – but I thought the Alfano ‘Cyrano de Bergerac’ – a work that no-one would have considered without mega-star power to guarantee it, was a really interesting and worthwhile exhumation, and one that fitted Domingo well in the late autumn of his career.

I have no idea why this should mean that “Royal Opera House might have to reconsider its obsessesion with operatic celebrity”. Lot of singers have had to cancel due to medical emergencies. Christina Gallardo-Domas comes to mind as a recent example. This can happen to ANYONE, also singers much younger than domingo.

  • Ruxton says:

God bless Placido and give him a speedy recovery.

Enclosed is a copy of the letter sent today to all ticketholders for the Domingo shows of Tamerlano, which the “arrogant” ROH put together yesterday after receiving the news and hastily rescheduled rehearsals. Perhaps Tenorfach would like to eat his words and possibly choke on them …..

It is with enormous disappointment and regret that I must inform you that, due to illness, Plácido Domingo has withdrawn from his scheduled performances of Tamerlano with The Royal Opera.

The role of Bajazet will now be sung in all performances by American tenor Kurt Streit who was already scheduled to sing the role on 13 and 17 March.

After suffering from lower abdominal pain which had caused him some physical discomfort during his performances in Tokyo, Plácido Domingo recently returned to New York for a complete physical check up. On his doctor’s advice he has undergone preventive surgery. Following the surgery, doctors will have a better idea of when Plácido will be able to return to his normal schedule, which is hoped to be in about six weeks.

We are, of course, all very concerned for Plácido and wish him a speedy and successful recovery. We also know that he is devastated that he will not be able to perform the role of Bajazet in this wonderful production of Tamerlano here at the Royal Opera House in London. He sends his very best wishes to Kurt Streit for a successful production and he is greatly looking forward to his return to the Royal Opera House this summer in Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra.

We find ourselves in extraordinary circumstances. Plácido Domingo is an exceptional artist and Tamerlano is an exceptional piece. We are very confident that you will enjoy the performance but also recognize that for some of you this news could come as a great disappointment. In view of the exceptional circumstances we would like to offer a 20% credit note in the form of a Royal Opera House Gift Certificate. The Gift Certificate may be used against any tickets for future performances or as a gift for a friend or family member. If you would like to receive a Gift Certificate please send a request in writing
