Passing the baton

veronesiAlberto Veronesi has been appointed Music Director of Opera Orchestra of New York, effective in the 2011-12 season. He will succeed OONY founder Eve Queler, who will become Conductor Laureate once Veronesi’s initial five-year tenure begins.

During the Opera Orchestra’s 2010-11 40th-anniversary season he will serve as Music Director Designate and conduct an opera-in-concert performance, as well as helping to plan future seasons.

The end of Oom-pah-pah conducting? Say it isn’t so!

  • Quanto Painy Fakor says:

Maestro Veronesi is a good choice, but how is this possible? OONY has always been Ms. Queller’s baby.

I saw him conduct La Rondine in Nice in 2008. He did a very good job, though the production (from Torre del Lago) was a an overblown, incoherent mess (with two near-naked dancers portraying nesting swallows each time Magda had one of her big moments) and the singing wasn’t too inspiring.

  • Is it me or is this guy resembling Franco Bonisolli? They look like father and son? Can we have a side by side comparison Cieca carissima?

Is OONY still going to do either Medea or Rienzi? What’s the latest?

That is Mo. Veronesi? God, he is handsome — I’ll be at every concert if he conducts.

  • Quanto Painy Fakor says:

Of course he is a Mo. – the head Mo at the Puccini Festival at Torre del Lago.
    He’s the Lago Mo.

      E MIO!!!!

Apropos of nothing herein: I’ve driven all the way to Petaluma just to listen to Pavarotti/Sutherland’s ’76 I Puritani — can it only–oops here comes the high D (T’aaMMMMMMMOOOOO!)

GOD — can it only be 34 years ago people sang like that??? It’s like another world/realm/legend–oops– here comes the high F altissimo — god, it’s so wonderful!
Sorry for my enthused digression, fellows.

  • Quanto Painy Fakor says:

And he’s a married Lago Mo with wife and child.

I kind of want to mention the hair but I’m not sure that would be a great idea…

    • Sanford says:

He’s got a serious case of baritone hair. Isn’t that the same hair the Ramey, Milnes and Hampson had?

    • manou says:

Sorry but the Oscar for Mo-hair belongs to Riccardo Muti (lifetime achievement).

(Small housekeeping question : I have been checking the relevant box to get email notifications, but wonder whether one has to check all the boxes individually on each thread as I have so far received nada)
